Splice without a Knife Wins High Five Award From Rio Tinto Iron Ore at Dampier Ports

The Knifeless splicing process won the quarterly High 5 award from Rio Tinto Iron Ore at Dampier Ports. There were three winners announced from nominations across all the Iron Ore business units.

In conjunction with external partners and the Health and Safety departments, the Dampier Ports Maintenance team found that the knifeless solution to belt splicing challenges a long-standing perception that splicing belts can only be accomplished using knives.

The idea for the initiative was sparked following two recordable knife use incidents at the same site within the past 12 months. The implementation was only possible due to the valuable support from the site and to the research and development team.

With this new process in place, the team has eliminated the risk of laceration, puncture and other knife-related injuries, improving the splicing efficiency.
